Newborn Dilated Kidneys

On August 27 we took baby to the hospital for a Renal Gammagrama (don't know the translation). It was one of the longest excursions yet and I must tell you the kids were so patient with us. For as much time as we spent at the hospital they behaved really well. That may be the last time we take the kids to things like this though, it's too much in one day.

 

So why the study? Joaquin's kidneys were dilated during my pregnancy. Ten days after birth he had an kidney ultrasound, they looked normal except some dilation. The tissue is fine it's just that there's more liquid than there should be in one area. The procedure helped us see if the kidneys were functioning, and they were. They both work. We were able to notice that some liquid does linger after he urinates. And we will see a urologist in a couple weeks to help us determine what we'll do next. Fortunately we are catching all this early and hopefully we'll have more answers after our Urologist appointment. 

 

Below are some photos of him. He was so good that day. He spend 40 minutes on the bed so that they could do the scan. He was pretty calm the majority of the time. That day he weighed 13 lbs! The doctor couldn't believe it, everybody here is amazed by his size :) The worst part of the whole night was when they were putting in the IV. Baby veins are so thin! I had a hard time watching that happen, but I"m greateful I was there and able to help soothe him afterwards. He was a trooper.

We were so lucky Emerson brought his blankie to the hospital, it was the perfect size for swaddling, warm & soft.
